The CaHRU Improvement Science and Research Methods seminar, presented by Dr Vanessa Botan on Questionnaire validation: exploring the experiences of people with Guillain Barrè Syndrome, took place on 
24 November 2021.
Vanessa is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Medical Statistics in CaHRU who has a multidisciplinary and diverse background with expertise in statistical data analyses and research methods across various fields including biomedical sciences, neuroscience, and psychology. Her ongoing academic interests include medical statistics and intervention-based research.
The seminar discussed different types of validity including face, content, construct and criterion validity and the approaches to determine these. It also explore different approaches to reliability, including internal consistency, repeatability and inter-rater reliability. Vanessa went on to describe how these had been used in a recent study developing a Patient Reported Experience Measure for people recovering from Guillain Barrè Syndrome, including the use of factor analysis, reliability assessment using Cronbach’s alpha and the methods used to explore reliability and validity of the instrument.
